Things You'll Need:
- Small or Medium Glass Cigar Tube or Test Tube (non-tempered)
- Large Canister of Mapp Gas
- Torch Head for the Mapp Gas
- Welding Gloves
- Goggles
- Heavy Clothing
Step 1
Put on the goggles, heavy clothing, and welding gloves before beginning. Tie back any long hair that may get in the way. If your hair is past your shoulders you can tuck into the back of your shirt to prevent it from getting singed or burned.
Step 2
Prepare the materials in a location away from flammable materials that is not too cold. Over 70 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. Glass can shatter if it cools too quickly after being heated.
Step 3
Turn on the torch and get it burning with a medium flame. The base of the flame should be blue and the tip should feather slightly. About a 3-4 inch flame should be sufficient.
Step 4
Hold the glass tube and heat the rounded end while rolling the tube back and forth so that it heats evenly all around. Continue heating the tube until the entire end is glowing red hot and beginning to lose its shape.
Step 5
Blow into the open end of the tube while continuing to heat the opposite end. Take care not to burn your lips on the tube. The end of the tube should start to bubble out. You want to try and keep the walls of the bubble as thick as possible and as evenly around as you can. About twice the diameter of the tube will be large enough.
Step 6
Allow the glass to cool some once you have your bubble formed on the end.
Step 7
Heat just one spot on the outer edge of your bubble with the torch at a bit of angle to it to form the bowl. You want the outer rim of the bowl to be parallel to the length of the pipe so don't do this right at the tip. Make sure it is on the side of the bubble.
Step 8
Begin gently blowing on the outside of the bubble where you are heating it. Don't stop heating it with the torch. The glass should begin to sink into the bubble slightly. Continue until you have a bowl deep enough to hold tobacco. Allow the pipe to cool some.
Step 9
Turn your torch up some so that you have a nice point on the tip of the flame and touch just the tip of the flame to the center of the bowl. When you have a small red spot heated, suck in on the opposite end of the pipe until you suck a hole though the bowl. You don't want this hole to be much bigger than a pencil lead or your tobacco will go through it.
Step 10
Allow your pipe to completely cool. Fill your new glass pipe with your favorite tobacco and enjoy.
